Komoya Ubusulu
Preservation of Spiritual Force
THE PROJECT
—
“Komoya Ubusulu” is a line of high-quality homemade traditional African tribal wine. The name “Komoya” means spiritual in the Zulu language, which is often portrayed using a mask. The meaning of “Ubusulu” in Zulu, is a wine made from the sap of various palm trees with sugarcane juice. Palm wine in traditional African ceremonies is used as an offering to a deity or god, and it marks respect to the African ancestors. The concept of this project is to preserve the African tribal culture and heritage history.
Integral: Branding, Logo, Packaging, Illustrations
—
The wine label illustrations were inspired by the African tribal masks. Different shapes and patterns emphasized the spiritual power and statuses that control the tribes. Each mask would be infused with special flavours that represented the individuals such as King Inkosi, with ginger root and orange peel, Queen Indlovukazi, with rose and vanilla, and Healer Sangoma with yarrow leaf and boneset. The different geometric shapes illustrated on the outer container are known as Ndebele patterns. These patterns portray the communication of personal prayers, self-identification, values, emotions, and marriage. Lastly, the vibrant colours were chosen to reflect the culture and art of the African tribe.
